Joey Rositano calls Nashville, Tennessee home. After extensive adventures in Europe, he found himself moving to Jeju Island, South Korea in 2007 to teach English. During those initial years he heard a lot of hearsay about a mysterious practice of shamanism on the island that he at last decided to explore for himself. What he found was the fascinating world of mystical shrines, indomitable grandmas, and spirits among us. Realizing the exigency of the hastening loss of Jeju’s history, language, and identity, Rositano set out to record the voices and stories of the island in his documentary Spirits and the associated photobook.
