Joey Rositano is a writer and photo-essay book maker based on Jeju Island in South Korea. Rositano has lived on Jeju for over fifteen years and during this time has produced a number of projects related to the shamanism and other aspects of the local culture. His documentary Spirits and the associated photobook explores the relationship between people and their shamanic shrines on the island. You can see his related TEDx topic here. His two recent works: The Sacred Trees of Jeju Island, journeys 2013-2023 examines the sacred heritage of Jeju Island through a close look at the island’s sacred tree tradition; Scattering takes a deep dive into the special relationship between a single Jeju Island village and its resident population of large-billed crows. In this work Rositano explores this ancient relationship and the use of human facial recognition by crows in a natural context.
